WHAT IS MORBID OBESITY?

Morbid obesity is when a person is 100lbs over their ideal weight.  Morbid obesity can also be life threatening.  Diabetes, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, heart disease, and even death can be an outcome of this disease! But do not fear for there is hope to all fat people because now with new and improved technology we are able to remove the fat in not 1 but 2 different surgeries!!!

Gastric Bypass Surgery

The older of the two surgeries is known as Gastric Bypass Surgery. Its purpose is to reduce a lot of weight in an amazingly quick amount of time. But although the procedure rids of fat very quickly it can also be hazardous to your  health. Some risks of this process include:

  • Extreme blood loss
  • Metabolic bone disease (causes pain in the bone, loss of height, and fractures in the ribs)
  • Ulcers
  • Malignancy
  • Dumping syndrome (no need to go into detail)

Also once this surgery is done you can never go back. This process is irreversible.

Lap Band

The most recent breakthrough of weight loss surgery created in the early 1990's is the Lap Band system. Compared to the Gastric Bypass surgery it is more efficient, less hazardous, and can actually be removed. But the very few risks are:

  • Band erosion
  • Band slippage or shifting
  • Swallowing problems
  • Injury to stomach or any other organs during surgery

Even though the Gastric Bypass Surgery is a lot faster than this operation the Lap Band still is preferred. The target weight loss is reached within two years.

Who Is A Candidate For These Types Of Surgeries?

Even though both procedures cost between 15-30,000 dollars; some people, of the morbid obese nature, feel the cost simply isn't an issue. These people face seven times the risk of deaths from a heart attack. Those with the immediate health concerns that morbid obesity brings do not have time to waste and feel that there lives are more valuable than any amount of money.

Develop Healthful Eating Habits

People who eat healthy foods will not overeat as much as those who eat unhealthy foods.  Healthy foods supply nutrients that let a person know that they are full.  Unhealthy foods lack the vitamins and minerals that fight food cravings.  Go to mypyramid.gov and discover ways that you can put together a healthy eating plan for yourself.
